Sexist and Violent Movies: Boondock Saints

Sat Mar 17, 2007, 7:11 PM
As posted on facebook:

I don't know why people like this movie. It's Tarantino-esque, meaning machismo up the ass, ruthless and brutal violence that breaks the weak plot backbone by tons. Frat people were watching it today when Mike and I got back, and I tried to watch it, but my bullshitometer instantly went off. It's also...not misogyist so much as...sexist, I suppose. The main guy, who is a glorified psycho, getting plenty of slow-motion rock-music scenes, tells his girlfriend's friend that he can't go to the store "without meeting 9 guys she's fucked." So she's a slut, apparently (a gender-specific term, of course), and women are worthless and deplorable if they've had sex with a certain number of guys. This same character also complains, when his group is holding a woman at gunpoint, that he always has to be on "bitch duty."

I feel almost precluded from criticizing these things in the movie because other people seemed to like it a lot, taking it no doubt as something you're just supposed to "have fun with." I'm not sure why it's easy for people to see racism in movies (let's say an equivalent movie but with a racial minority replacing women--it would be widely and almost unanimously criticized), but if sexism is present, the people who point it out are looking too hard, thinking too hard, or being man-hating feminists.

I left early because I felt that watching the movie was pointless and I wouldn't get anything out of it. Movies like this that are SO machismo, with bad-ass serial killers/drug lords/whatever, alarm me. Why trivialize the deaths of people (even "deserving" criminals) or glorify murder and violence? I don't prescribe to the idea that video games and movies make kids more violent, but there is some evidence to boost that (from the animal world, surprisingly). Nonetheless, I think that the gratuitous violence in American films is far more destructive and harmful than the gratuitous (to some people) sex in European films.

I'm just going to end here. I wish I didn't have to be called certain things or judged certain ways for having this opinion (this legitimizes dissenters' high/good opinion of the film). But whatever, I'm just putting my view out here. If anyone would like to enlighten me or defend the movie I'd be interested in hearing it.

Hi there beauitful remember me?
we never got to become good good friends. I want to work on that in time!
I haven't seen the movie yet. I always give movies chances as well. I can't say you're wrong or right for your view on the movie. all I know is as long as someone doesn't use what they see bad in the movie in real life then things should be ok. unforunately we have to live among hypocrites, rapists, etc. we dont' always know who is that or who isn't. But let me assure you. I know how to treat women right. no man should ever hit his lady. and when she asks for her space he better give it to her!
I shall be able to comment more to you and others on my deviantart list in the summer
*Summer*
I will be slightly busy til May sometime with my Graphic Design classes. in my 2nd semester but I will comment on everyone's stuff more once summer hits :smooch: (the friend kind)

P.S. you will always have my support on here. I understand to a point where you're coming from on the movie. But it's not a right or wrong point. I try to understand other's points on things. that way no arguement ensues. take care and speak your mind don't let others tell you you can't speak up for yourself. I got mad respect for you like that honey!

Life means everything when alive, and nothing when you die

I would rather be hated for what I said, instead of loved for what I never meant (to all the haters)

Question everything, including yourself and your self

Hey, me here :)

Logged onto here to comment on someone from around here. Supposed I'd drop by here. Didn't know you kept an open diary so avidly. :)

Eitherway, I love the works :).

Anyway, good to see you're still alive and kicking, bless you

Maurice

Hallo.
Ok, this is totally random. Back in 2003 I used to watch you, but I was on a different account. KeeperOfTimes. Anyhow, I remember you did this sketch of some guys in clothes you thought would be hot. For some reason, I recently remembered saying I have some similar clothes, and I would take some shots like the picture you did, but I never got around to it. Now Im back to try to find your picture, and do some related shots. I think I will deviate a little, but Im basically here to put a face to one of your sketches if you dont mind.

Your musky lips, cramping smoke into halos,
love to finger obscenities and slander. I am a bitch now.
Don’t touch her now, this thing of waste. She’s
Empty. She’s full of spite.
